North Sulawesi Discovery

Experience the very best of North Sulawesi culture and wildlife on this whirlwind trip through some of its highlights. Explore the beautiful Minahasa region, climb the active volcanoes and wander into the jungle of Tangkoko National Park in search of the rare, tiny Tarsius primate and other exotic wildlife

Day 1: Manado - Tangkoko

Welcome to Manado, the capital city of North Sulawesi, the gateway to stunning beaches and underwater landscape as well as great mountain panorama.

Depart to Tangkoko Nature Reserve with your guide. The 2-hour trip to this 9,000-hectare nature reserve is quite scenic as we pass on small villages.

In the afternoon, depart on two hours hike to the dense virgin jungle to have the opportunity to see some animal species unique to North Sulawesi such as Crested Macaques and the Tarsier Spectrum which is known as ‘the smallest primate in the world’. The sounds of the hornbill and the Maleo is not uncommon.

The jungle of Tangkoko houses least 127 mammal, 233 bird and 104 reptile and amphibian species. Of these 79 mammal, 103 bird and 29 reptile and amphibian species are endemic to the island. The star of all the mammals in this area is a Sulawesi endemic species known as Tarsier; the smallest primates in the world – only about a fist size – who make Tangkoko their last refuge and are found only in Sulawesi. Tarsiers (tarsius spectrum) look particularly cute because of their big saucer eyes. Locals know them as “Tangkasi”. Since these are nocturnal animals they can be observed only at night.

Dinner will be served at the hotel.

Option 1/2: Overnight Tangkoko Lodge–Standard AC room

Day 2: Tangkoko - Tomohon

Early in the morning, you start the three hours hike into the park for another opportunity to observe the monkeys and birds up close as they are searching for food along the coastline of Tangkoko. Return to the hotel for breakfast.

Continue to Tomohon late in the morning and explore the Minahasa highland along the way. On an average altitude of 700-800 meters, the area has a lot to offer. Stop at Pagoda Ekayana in the village of Kakaskasen. A place of worship for Buddhists, the pagoda also welcomes visitors to admire its architectures that blend well with the surrounding nature. Witness the construction of the traditional wooden house in Woloan and visit the pottery village of Pulutan.
